You'll remember that reigning Miss America Teresa Scanlan helped SYF announced the scholarship for students in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools in the fall of 2011 during a community event hosted by Arundel Mills.
Congratulations to 18-year-old Rachel Makinde, who was named the scholarship winner after the essay she submitted on the topic If You Were Miss America, What Cause Would You Champion and Why? was named the best by a panel of judges.
Makinde's essay focused on Autism Awareness and Reseach. She was awarded the $5,000 collegiate scholarship, a $1,000 American Express Simon Giftcard and the opportunity to spend the day shadowing Miss Maryland - all courtesy of SYF and Arundel Mills.
Four scholarship contest runners up received $250 American Express Simon Giftcard.

In partnership with the Arundel Mills in Hanover, Md., and using funds raised by the Simon property's valet parking service, Simon Youth Foundation announced a new Simon Youth Scholarship competition for students in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011.
SYF President and CEO J. Michael Durnil, Ph.D., was joined by Miss America Teresa Scanlan for the announcement, which was made during The Fashion Event, a fashion show that celebrated women of all ages and recognized role models from the military community at Fort George G. Meade.
"All of the credit for this scholarship competition goes to Arundel Mills and its management team, which dedicated proceeds from the mall's $2 valet parking service to fund this $5,000 Simon Youth Scholarship," Durnil says. "Partners like Arundel Mills sustain the SYF education programs that ignite hope in students."

Under the scholarship contest rules, Anne Arundel County Schools students between 13- and 18-years-old have until November 28, 2011, to submit an essay on the topic If You Were Miss America, What Cause Would You Champion and Why?
Applications for the essay competition and more details are available at the Arundel Mills website or the Arundel Mills Facebook page.
"This opportunity offers our students a chance to earn much needed funds for their post secondary education, and in this very tough economy, financing higher education is a challenge," says Susan Love, the School Counseling Specialist for the Anne Arundel County Public Schools. "The Simon Youth Foundation in partnership with Arundel Mills Scholarship affords an opportunity for a local student to achieve the dream of a college or technical education, and I would like to encourage all eligible students to enter."
