Key criteria for the assessment of candidates
For applicants applying with an honours (4-year) bachelor degree, the grades obtained during the bachelor program will be considered. Qualifications required The scholarships are open to Danish and international applicants. Normally, we expect applicants to have obtained an MSc degree in Chemistry but it is also possible to enroll in the 4+4 scheme either with an honours (4 year) bachelor or with a 3 year BSc degree and 1 MSc year already completed. This model requires an addition year of study, a midway qualification exam, and lower salary for the first two years. An assessment committee that evaluates the applications will be appointed. Each applicant will be notified of the composition of the committee and will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns her/him. The main criterion for selection of the PhD candidates will be the research potential of the applicant. The final selection of successful candidates will be made by the Head of the Department, based on the recommendations made by the evaluation committee. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen and to start their enrolment not later than December 1st 2013. Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 304.056 per year (April 2013 level) plus pension contribution and the possibility to negotiate wages. The The aim of the programme is to help reduce the shortage of skilled workers.
Description
The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are designed to promote capacity building within organisations in 61 countries by providing training and education to mid-career staff. The NFP is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the budget for development cooperation.
The overall aim of the NFP is to help alleviate qualitative and quantitative shortages of skilled manpower within a wide range of governmental, private and non-governmental organisations. This is done by offering fellowships to mid-career professionals to improve the capacity of their employing organisations
Eligibility
To be eligible for an NFP fellowship you must:
- be a mid-career professional with at least three years' relevant work experience;
- be a national of, and working and living in one of the countries on the NFP country list valid at the time of application;
- be nominated by your employer, who pledges to continue paying your salary and guarantees that you will be able to return to the same or an equivalent position at the end of your fellowship period;
- have been unconditionally admitted by a Dutch institution to one of the Master’s degree programmes or Short courses on the 2012-2013 course list, or have agreed upon a PhD research proposal with the Dutch institution. This means that you must have met all the academic requirements set by the Dutch institution;
- not already have received an NFP fellowship for a master’s degree programme or a PhD fellowship.
- not already have received two NFP fellowships for a short course and you must not have already received a fellowship in the year preceding your application.
- not be employed by:- a multinational corporation (e.g. Shell, Unilever, Microsoft); - a large national and/or commercial organisation; - a bilateral donor organisation (e.g. USAID, DFID, Danida, Sida, Dutch ministry of Foreign affairs, FinAid, AusAid, ADC, SwissAid); - a multilateral donor organisation, (e.g. a UN organisation, the World Bank, the IMF, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, IADB); - an international NGO (e.g. Oxfam, Plan, Care).

- have a clear-cut, functional relationship with a relevant organisation and be in a position to introduce the newly acquired skills and knowledge into that organisation;
- be full-time available for the entire period of the programme or course and be physically and mentally able to take part in the entire programme;
- endorse the objective and the aim of the NFP and use your new knowledge and skills to support your employing organisation and your country. Nuffic urges you to return to your home country upon finishing the course or programme to meet the NFP aim in the most effective way.
Application Procedure
To be eligible for an NFP fellowship, candidates need to be admitted to the master’s degree programme or short course for which they would like an NFP fellowship or be admitted as a PhD student.
Obtain academic admission
You first apply for academic admission directly to the Dutch institution. Your admission must be unconditional in terms of your education and language proficiency. Admission may be granted only, subject to you finding suitable funding for the programme.
You are strongly advised to seek academic admission as early as possible to allow the institution to process your application in time. Check the deadlines for academic admission with the Dutch institution directly for up-to-date information.
The academic admission process for a PhD study is an individual track. If you want to be admitted as a PhD student check the requirements and the deadlines with the Dutch institution.
If you have been admitted to more than one course or study programme in one fellowship per applicationdeadline you will have to choose one programme before you apply for a fellowship.

Students Make a Difference in the Community
Academy students assisted with birthday celebrations for participants at an adult day program at Park Synagogue Main in Cleveland Heights. They also participated in a blood drive, and volunteered in the kindergarten classroom at Mercer Elementary School in Shaker Heights. They partnered with JFSA in working with children with disabilities at Brush High School in Lyndhurst, and assisted students with disabilities at Orange High School in Pepper Pike.
At Memorial Junior High School in South Euclid, students explained that the choices they had made earlier led to the need to go to an alternative school, and they encouraged younger students to make better choices.
Simon Youth Foundation is celebrating 15 years of igniting hope, graduating more than 10,000 students, and awarding more than $10 million in scholarships. The 23 academies in 13 states partner with more than 50 school districts and graduate students at a 90% rate. Learn more at syf.org.

What’s the point?
Jorge was two years old when he was brought to the United States. His parents worked very hard to provide for him and his younger brother. Sometimes hot water or electricity was off, but he never thought twice about why because his family was happy. As he grew older, he noticed a difference between the other kids at school and him.
“I’d ask to go on class field trips or camps and be told no,” Jorge said. “I didn’t understand why the other kids could go but I had to stay at home. I realized as a teenager the reason was because of how my parents came to the U.S.”
For a short time, Jorge resented his parents. This is when he started asking the question, ‘What’s the point?’ If he wasn’t able to go on a field trip, how would a diploma change his life? It took him a year to get over these feelings.
“I was filled with frustration and feeling sorry for myself because of the situation instead of trying to figure out how I can succeed. The day I stepped into the Academy that changed. It was that day I decided I wanted it as opposed to everyone wanting it for me.”
Jorge credits the one-on-one instruction and working at his own pace as the primary factors keeping him motivated. He started seeing progress and helped him continue setting daily goals. The real lesson he was learning – I can do this. And he hasn’t stopped since then.
“Graduation is not the ending for me. I’m going to Glendale Community College and then Arizona State University to study engineering. I’m that much closer to my dreams, so I’m not going to waste time. I got this.”

History Lesson Moves Students

The book study was part of the Knoxville Rotary Club six week book study program the Academy students participate in as a part of the history class curriculum. Justice Sharon Lee of the Tennessee Supreme Court came to discuss the book and bring her own father’s story of survival in a Nazi concentration camp after being captured during the war. It is one thing to read a book and keep a “distance” from the realities and atrocities experienced and hearing an account from someone with intimate knowledge of the subject matter.
“We’ve had several speakers come to speak to our students, but I’ve rarely seen everyone so engaged like they were,” said Kim Towe, Administrator at the Academy. “Her father’s story had so many pieces of knowledge the students could relate to on a personal level. She really captured and kept their attention the entire presentation.”
Justice Lee talked with the students about what her father went through after being captured and sent to a concentration camp. She described the deplorable conditions, lack of food and water, and watching people he would become acquainted with be dragged away, never to be seen again. One of the interesting points she talked about was how everyone at the camp came together like a family. They would encourage each other on difficult days, share what little food or water they had, and do whatever necessary to keep hope alive.
Relating back to some of the struggles the students at the Academy may have had or are having, Justice Lee tried to bring everything into perspective. Whether reading about history in a book or thinking about your personal history, you can learn from both successes and failures, and how you can apply them today.
About the book “Night”The book is an autobiographical account of life in the Nazi death camps. Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel takes his readers with him from his home, into the ghetto, on the transport, through Selections, into the concentration camps, on the Death March, and beyond. Reading this book gives one a deeper and more personal understanding of the Holocaust experience. Only with this understanding can one genuinely remember the Holocaust and thus help ensure it won't happen again.
