Dr. Anita Borg (1949-2003) devoted her adult life to revolutionising the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology.
As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, we are pleased to announce The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Through the scholarship, we aim to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, and become active role models and leaders.
Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic performance, leadership experience and demonstrated passion for computer science. A group of female Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients will each receive a €7,000 (or equivalent) scholarship.
In June 2010, all scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to visit Google’s Engineering Centre in Zurich for a networking retreat. It will include workshops with a series of speakers, panels, breakout sessions and social activities, and will provide an opportunity for all finalists to meet and share their experiences.
Eligibility requirements
Candidates must:
Be a female student entering her final year of a Bachelor’s degree, or enrolled in an a Master’s or PhD programme (or equivalent), in 2010/2011.
Be enrolled at a University in Europe, the Middle East, or Africa. Citizens, permanent residents, and international students are eligible to apply.
Be studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, or a closely related technical field.
Maintain an excellent academic record (e.g. a First Class Honours degree).

What are the objectives of the programme?
This programme is designed to academically qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics and administration according to the principles of Good Governance and to prepare them in a praxis-oriented course for their professional life. The programme offers very good graduates with a first university degree the chance to obtain a Master’s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. With the knowledge and experience acquired in Germany the scholarship holders should later contribute to the establishment of democratically oriented economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social tensions. In addition, the training at German institutions of higher education should especially qualify the scholarship holders as partners in political and economic cooperation with Germany. With this programme, DAAD intends to contribute to the support of Good Governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions.

The scholarship scheme is open to candidates from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, Southeast Asia as well as from countries in the Middle East. Target group Very well qualified graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who in the future want to actively contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries. What is fundable?
The scholarships are (generally) for two-year Master courses at a German institution of higher education. The successful candidates will study on one of the selected Master courses listed below. The courses have an international orientation and are taught in German and/or English.
The scholarship holders will study in groups and be offered special tutoring at their host institutions. Furthermore, there is the possibility of networking events for participants in different courses and their attendance at tailor-made summer-schools.
Before taking up their Master studies the scholarship holders will be placed on German courses in Germany for normally 6 months (this also applies to scholarship holders in Master courses taught in English).
DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 €. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and / or family allowances.
Selection In addition to the study results achieved so far, the main criterion for selection is a convincing description of the subject-related and personal motivation for the study project in Germany and the expected benefit after the return to the home country.
For Master courses taught in German or in German and English, good knowledge of German (ideally at completed A 2 level at the time of application) is an advantage for being able to pass the German language test required for admission to the Master programme at the end of the six-month preparatory German course. For courses taught
in English, proof of good knowledge of English (generally a minimum of 550 TOEFL scores or equivalent) is required.
The university degree should have been obtained during the six years before the application for the scholarship. Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application.
All Master courses have further additional requirements that must be fulfilled by the applicants at any case.

Full Scholarships for East African Students in ITC, The Netherlands
FULL SCHOLARSHIPS: FIVE (5) Ph. D. AND ONE (1) POST DOCTORAL POSITIONS AVAILABLE FOR NATIONALS FROM EAST AFRICA
These scholarships are offered under the research project “EOIA: An Earth Observation? and Integrated Assessment approach to the Governance of Lake Naivasha” is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research under the WOTRO ?Global Science for Development Programme.
The project will be implemented jointly by Egerton University (Kenya), and the International Institute of Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation (ITC, The Netherlands) and the University of Twente (The Netherlands). Collaborating partners are the University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Leicester (UK) and the University of Bournemouth (UK). The main stakeholders in the project are Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA), Lake Naivasha Growers Group (LNGG), Lake Naivasha Riparian Organisation (LNRA), World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) and the World Wildlife Fund ? East Africa Regional Programme Office (WWF?EARPO), all based in Kenya.
The research aims at enhancing sustainability in management of water resources and the environment using Lake Naivasha as a pilot case and adopting Integrated Assessment approach to generate lessons and best practices which can be replicated in other catchments in Kenya and in the East Africa region. Major inputs to the assessment include participatory processes and physical and economic models combined with data derived from remote sensing techniques.
In the framework of this project 5 PhD candidates will be recruited for the following projects.
1. Quantifying the effect of landuse change in upper catchments of Lake Naivasha on water quantity and quality of the Lake ? Tenable at ITC/Twente
2. Impact of exogenous and endogenous changes on limnology, fisheries and piscivorous birds – Tenable at Egerton University Kenya
3. Hydrological impacts on terrestrial fringe biodiversity?Tenable at ITC/Twente

5. Socio?economic linkages – Tenable at ITC/Twente

Thanks to the political and financial support of the Prime Minister and of the Minister for Education of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, CEPS/INSTEAD launched in 2002 the IMPALLA program, an advanced and innovative academic one-year master program in social policy and research.
In order to guarantee the academic standards of the IMPALLA program, CEPS/INSTEAD has made a joint venture agreement with the University of Leuven (K.U. Leuven, Belgium) as key partner. The IMPALLA program leads to an advanced Master Degree issued by the K.U. Leuven where the IMPALLA students are registered as regular students.
Meanwhile also the Universities of Nancy 2 (France), Tilburg (The Netherlands) and Luxembourg are part of the organizing network.
IMPALLA academic program has three major objectives:
- to offer a solid theoretical foundation in comparative socio-economic policies, at the European level and beyond
- to provide a thorough training in advanced research methodology
- to give a well-founded expertise in policy evaluation
We are looking for applicants with the following profile:

INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATION UNION (ITU) ESSAY COMPETITION!
The Essay Competition is open to current students and recent graduates in
economics, political science, law, literature, telecommunications, computer
science, information systems and related fields between the ages of 20 and
30 years old.
The winners of the 2009 Essay Competition will be offered the opportunity of
a consultancy contract within the ITU Development Sector's ICT Applications
and Cybersecurity Division for three months.
The winners will be given a contribution towards the cost of an economy
class flight from their place of residence. In addition, they will be paid
the sum of CHF 6000 towards living expenses for the duration of the
contract.

The Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize
TWAS and illycaffè s.p.a. have instituted a high-level prize to honour distinguished scientists from developing countries. The Trieste Town Council and the Trieste International Foundation for Scientific Progress and Freedom are collaborating in this effort.
The first four-year cycle of the prize (2005-2008) was established to give international recognition and visibility to outstanding scientific achievements made in basic sciences by individual scientists in developing countries. It was named the 'Trieste Science Prize', in recognition of the unique and fundamental role that the Trieste System of scientific institutions plays in promoting science and technology in the developing world.
The second four-year cycle (2009-2012) of the prize, now called the 'Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize' to honour the late former President of illycaffè, will focus on sustainability science. The prize is awarded annually and rotate among the following fields:
(a) Climate change and its impact on agriculture in developing countries (2009)
(b) Energy (2010)
(c) Materials science (2011)
(d) Human health (2012)
Each prize carries a monetary award of US$100,000 generously contributed by illycaffè, a trophy and a certificate bearing a citation highlighting the major contributions for which the prize is awarded. The annual prize will be presented to the recipient at a special occasion arranged by TWAS, illycaffè and the Trieste Town Council.
Eligibility
Candidates must be nationals of developing countries, working and living in the South.
The prizes will only be awarded to individuals for scientific research of outstanding international merit carried out at institutions in developing countries.
Individuals who have received the Nobel Prize, the Tokyo/Kyoto Prize, the Crafoord Prize or the Abel Prize are not eligible for the Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize.
Evaluation
The evaluation is carried out by a scientific committee, chaired by the TWAS President, consisting of an authoritative and international jury and a designated representative from illycaffè.
Jury members are not eligible for the Ernesto Illy Trieste Science Prize.
Nominations
Nominations are invited from TWAS members, selected individuals, as well as from science academies, national research councils, universities and scientific institutions. Self-nominations will not be accepted.
Nominations should be accompanied by a 5-6 page biographical sketch of the nominee including his/her major scientific accomplishments, list and copies of not more than 20 of the candidate's most significant publications and a complete list of publications. A brief professional C.V. of the candidate is also to be included.
Deadline
The deadline for receiving nominations for the 2009 prize for outstanding contributions in Climate change and its impact on agriculture in developing countries is 31 May 2009.
