Stockholm University School of Business welcomes applications to the Doctoral Programme in Business Administration and for full-time positions as Doctoral Researcher in Accounting, Finance, Management and Marketing beginning September 1, 2010.

Admission requirements
Applicants must either have completed a master’s degree, or completed at least 240 ECTS (incl. at least 60 ECTS at master’s level), or acquired the equivalent knowledge through academic studies in Sweden or abroad. Applicants must also have completed at least 90 ECTS in business administration, incl. a master’s dissertation of at least 15 ECTS.


Selection criteria

Selection is made on the basis of

(i) documented knowledge in a relevant subject area,
(ii) English language skills (written and spoken), and
(iii) analytical, critical and creative thinking skills. We pay particular attention to the quality of your research proposal, your academic merits, and your academic references. Short-listed candidates are called to an interview.

The Fulbright Junior Staff Development (JSD) Program for Tanzanians

The Embassy of the United States in Dar es Salaam has the pleasure to announce the 2011-2012 Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program and to invite applications from qualified candidates.

The Fulbright Junior Staff Development (JSD) Program is the largest Fulbright program with Africa and provides financial assistance for a maximum of two years of study toward a graduate degree in a U.S. university or for participation in a non-degree research or nonacademic professional program. It is designed primarily to strengthen African universities through higher degree training for faculty members. Applications are also accepted from prospective candidates in public and private educational and cultural institutions, independent research institutes, and professional institutions.

The JSD program is open to any qualified candidate but strongly encourages the inclusion of female candidates and prefers candidates who have not had extensive recent experience in the United States. Recent (within three years) recipients of Fulbright grants are not eligible to apply, and it should be emphasized that funding is for a maximum period of two years only. It is important to note that doctoral degree candidates will typically need to secure additional funding to complete their course of study.


Eligibility Requirements

1. Applicants must be citizens of Tanzania or permanent residents qualified to hold a valid passport issued by Tanzania.

2. Applicants must have a record of outstanding academic achievement and preparation in their chosen field of study. They must show high motivation and serious commitment to completing the program and to returning home.

3. Applicants should either be candidates for an advanced degree in their current field or for a specialized non-degree program in a field for which they are well prepared. Applicants who wish to pursue study in a field other than their current field of study must demonstrate adequate background in that field.

4. Applicants must be affiliated with or committed to working at an academic institution or a public or private institution in Tanzania upon return, and should have the endorsement of their home institution.

5. Applicants must have a sufficiently high level of English proficiency to enable them to complete a full-time program of graduate study in the United States.

In Tanzania, the Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program is administered by the U.S. Embassy's Public Affairs Section, which nominates candidates to the Fulbright Scholarship Board in Washington, DC. The Fulbright Scholarship Board makes the final selection of candidates. In order for the Embassy to complete the nomination process before the deadline date for submission, we urge aspiring candidates to submit their applications to the Embassy by May 17, 2010; applications received after this date will not be considered.

Categories
Please limit each essay to one category. Individuals may submit up to one essay for each category. The following are the topics, along with brief descriptions and suggested questions. Feel free to answer these and/or any of your own about each topic that you'd like to address.

* Democracy that delivers. Recent surveys show that people in all corners of the world generally prefer democracy to any other political system, yet they are frequently dissatisfied with how democracy works in their own country. One of the major reasons is the fact that people don’t realize the promised benefits of democracies, which are often plagued by corruption, exclusion, cronyism, and other social and economic ills. Successful essays in this category will examine citizen expectations of democracies, and the how democracies can go about meeting those expectations.

Optional questions to consider: Are you satisfied with how democracy works in your country? What is a democratic government's responsibility to its people? Is it purely a question of rights or is there something more to it? What do people expect democracy to deliver in your country? How can democracy lead to higher living standards and what are the linkages between democratic and economic freedom on your country?

* Entrepreneurship and society. The concept of social entrepreneurship is gaining visibility around the world, as individuals continue to explore ways in which private enterprise can address social problems in their countries. This visibility is bringing to the forefront the question of social benefits attained from all entrepreneurs, not just those included in the social entrepreneurship category. Successful essays in this category will examine the role of entrepreneurship in creating prosperous societies and addressing key developmental challenges and how that role can be best realized.

Optional questions to consider: What role should entrepreneurs play in society? Is their role purely profit-seeking or do they contribute in other ways? What prevents entrepreneurs from contributing more to society? What can be done to address such obstacles?

* Women and participation. Despite some recent progress, women remain excluded from political and economic participation around the world. Oftentimes, it is the combination of cultural and legal and regulatory barriers that prevents women from equal participation on both economic and political arenas. Successful essays in this category will examine barriers to women's participation in society and develop linkages between political, social, and economic empowerment.

Optional questions to consider: What does empowerment mean for women? How can economic empowerment for women lead to their political empowerment? How can women better organize to voice their needs and help level the playing field for women in business? How can women's participation strengthen economic policy for them and for all people? Are there examples of associations or other local organizations of women in your country that are working to put women's business issues on the political agenda?



First, second, and third place authors for each category will receive a $1,000 honorarium, and winning essays from each category will be published as Economic Reform Feature Service articles.


Judging Criteria

Essays will be evaluated by a panel of judges comprising CIPE staff and CIPE’s international partners. Since English may not be a participant's first language, spelling and grammar mistakes will not affect judging as long as ideas and thoughts are clearly laid out. Judges will take into consideration the following criteria:

* Content and guidelines: How well does the essay address the topic? Does the author include real life examples of problems?
* Essay Structure: Is the essay organized in a logical manner?
* Clarity and logic of ideas: Is there a well-defined problem and relevant context? Are arguments clear? Do the arguments and examples support the author's main idea?
* Creativity and orginality: Does the essay contain new, innovative, well-developed ideas?
* Impact of solutions: How do the proposed solutions address the problem identified?
* Youth's role: Does the essay outline a specific challenge or role for youth as part of the solution?

Special Research Fund - Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries

With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF), Ghent University is able to finance doctoral scholarships for candidates from developing countries who wish to obtain a Ph.D. at Ghent University. No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development. Relevance for development measures the degree in which the action of development corresponds with the expectations of the beneficiaries, the needs of the country, global priorities and the policies of partners and donors.


There are two types of scholarships: full grants for starting PhD students and grants with a maximum duration of 1 year for students finalizing their PhD research at Ghent University.


Before applying for this grant candidates have to find a 'promoter' (professor from Ghent University who will act as personal supervisor of the doctoral research) who agrees to support their application. The promoter has to fill in a separate document ('promoter's advice'- only available in Dutch) with advice on the candidate, stating the promoter's opinion on the potential of the candidate as a future researcher.


Type 1: Grants with a duration of 2x2 years for starting PhD researchers
This type of grant is intended for new PhD researchers who want to obtain a PhD degree at Ghent University.

Duration
There is an initial period of two years, which can be extended by an additional two years, depending on the evaluation of the progress report.

Who can apply?
The candidates must come from - and must also possess the nationality of – one of the countries on this list.

How does it work
The candidate applies to Ghent University jointly with a promoter of Ghent University.

The Research Council makes a selection of the applications based in part on the recommendations obtained from members of the Council for Development Cooperation. The recommendation is based on the evaluation of the doctoral project, the qualifications of the applicant for the doctoral scholarship and the scientific/scholarly potential of the promoter’s research group(s). The development of the research potential of the institution can also be taken into account in the evaluation.

How much funding is involved
The value of the scholarship depends on, a.o., the researcher’s family situation. The monthly allowance is approx. € 1,545.

Type 2: Grants with a maximum duration of 1 year, for finalizing PhD research at Ghent University

This type of grant is for PhD researchers who have already carried out a substantial part of their PhD research and who need maximum 1 year to finalize their PhD.

Duration
The grant can be either 6 or 12 months.

Who can apply
Candidates must come from - and must also possess the nationality of – one of the countries on this list. They also must prove that the doctoral research they have done so far, is clearly linked to Ghent University, meaning that previous collaboration with Ghent University must exist (please see the call for more information).

How does it work
The same application and evaluation procedure as for the type 1 grants is followed, with the exception that the feasibility to finalize the doctorate within the time span of the requested grant will also be taken into account for the evaluation of the applications.

Rotary Peace Fellowship (MA or Professional Certificate) 2011 Academic Year

Rotary, one of the world's largest humanitarian service organizations has partnered with seven leading universities around the globe to host the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution. Each year, Rotary selects up to 60 Fellows to study peace and conflict resolution at universities around the world.

Rotary is seeking non-Rotarian professionals interested in expanding their knowledge in international relations, public administration, sustainable development, peace studies and conflict resolution or a related field. Each year, up to 100 Rotary Peace Fellowships (50 master's degree fellowships and 50 professional development certificate fellowships) are offered on a competitive basis at six prestigious Rotary Centers around the world.

IIE Fellowships for African PhD Students

IIE Announces Dissertation Fellowships for African PhD Students

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is now accepting applications for the Dissertation Fellowship in Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic Development. The two-year fellowships of up to $10,000 per year will be awarded by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and IIE. The fellowships are open to students currently enrolled in Ph.D. programs in sub-Saharan Africa. Students in economics, economic demography, geography, and epidemiology are especially encouraged to apply.

These fellowships will support dissertation research on topics that examine how population dynamics and family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) influence economic development, including economic growth, poverty reduction, and equity.


Dissertations that address population and development issues pertinent to the African continent are especially encouraged. The research must include a strong quantitative component, with an emphasis on rigorous data analysis. We encourage the development or use of new statistical methods. Finally, the research must have a strong policy-relevant component, demonstrating an interest in communicating research results with program managers, planners, and policymakers.

The objective of The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation/IIE Dissertation Fellowship is to produce sound evidence on the role of population and reproductive health in economic development that could be incorporated into national and international economic planning and decision making.


APPLICATION

ELIGIBILITY
Students currently enrolled full-time in Ph.D. programs in sub-Saharan Africa are encouraged and eligible to apply. Applications are especially sought from students in economics, economic demography, geography, and epidemiology. Applications from students in other disciplines will be considered if their dissertation research meets the methodological requirements of the program. Students are eligible to apply if they have a dissertation proposal in progress and/or will have completed all coursework by the beginning of the fellowship program.


FELLOWSHIP AWARD

The Hewlett/IIE Dissertation Fellowship in Population, Reproductive Health, and Economic Development will support up to 8 two-year fellowships beginning in 2010, with the start date depending on the academic cycle of the university you are enrolled in. Awards will be announced in the spring of 2010. Fellowship recipients from sub-Saharan Africa are awarded a maximum of $10,000 per year (depending on cost of living and university and research expenses in country) for two years to cover expenses incurred while working on their dissertation, including tuition, travel for research purposes, acquisition of data and research materials, and personal living expenses. (Detailed budgets must be submitted with your application). Fellows will become part of a network of researchers supported by the Hewlett Foundation, PRB, IIE and other funders.

Network activities during the two-year fellowship period will include, an annual research conference in the winter and other optional networking opportunities such as a workshop on advanced methods in population-economic analysis, and a writing workshop.
