General Information
On 1 September 2010 SOM’s PhD programme will start. The aim of the programme is to turn out highly qualified researchers. For this purpose, SOM offers PhD positions to excellent candidates who recently graduated. The PhD candidates will work on an individual project, leading to a doctoral dissertation. In the initial period, students are offered courses in relevant fields and research methods. The courses in the PhD programme are taught in English. During the remaining period, PhD students will work on their thesis. Work on the dissertation is carried out under supervision of SOM fellows. Supervision is close and the PhD students are encouraged to present papers at international conferences and to publish in recognised international journals.After the first year there will be an assessment of the candidate’s results and the project’s progress. Part of that is that the PhD student will have to defend his/her research proposal. Based on this, it will be decided whether a project will be continued.

PhD candidates will have an employee status and receive a starting salary of € 2042,- euro (gross). This salary increases yearly to achieve the final salary of € 2612,- (gross). MA SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TANZANIA
Funding: University of Ohio presents Opportunities for Graduate Study: Local Knowledge and Climate Change Adaptation in Tanzania

Two two-year research assistantships at the M.A. level are available through a new project on local knowledge and climate change adaptation in Tanzania supported by the National Science Foundation’s Geography and Spatial Science (GSS) Program. The project -Linking Local Knowledge and Local Institutions for the Study of Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change: Participatory GIS in Northern Tanzania – investigates the myriad ways in which human, social, and institutional capital enable households and communities to draw on local knowledge and outside specialist knowledge to moderate the negative effects of greater climatic instability on rural livelihoods.
In addition to completing required courses for the MA program over two academic years (2010-2011 and 2011-2012), the successful candidates will contribute to an international interdisciplinary research project. We expect applicants to develop a thesis project that contributes to the project’s research objectives.
One graduate research assistant will work on the development of online multimedia applications derived from a participatory GIS. Background or interest in cartography and web-based mapping is desirable.
A second research assistant will work with the research team on the implementation of the project’s participatory field methodology and contribute to data analysis. The student’s interests should be focused on environment-development interactions (e.g., the dynamics of resource access, political, environmental or cultural-linguistic dimensions of local knowledge systems, gendered aspects of climate change adaptation). Proficiency in Kiswahili or interest in learning Kiswahili at Ohio University is a plus.
The assistantships include two academic years of tuition waiver and stipend for students enrolled in the Geography M.A. program. Additional support is available for student field research activities in Tanzania.

ELIGIBILITY
Applications are sought from students in their final year of university programs in electrical engineering or an equivalent university degree involving at least 3 years of coursework (equivalent to 180 ECTS). Priority will be given to applicants whose background and interest match closely with those of MERIT. In any case, applicants should hold a university degree by September 1st 2010.
Applicants of MERIT Erasmus Mundus Category A student scholarships should qualify as third-country nationals, as defined in the Erasmus Mundus programme, i.e., nationals of all countries of the world with the exception of the Erasmus Mundus eligible applicant countries: the 27 EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom), the EEA-EFTA States (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway).
Additional MERIT Erasmus Mundus Category A student scholarships (up to 2) will be assigned to students from the “Western Balkans and Turkey Window”, i.e. nationals of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244/99, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey.
The following restrictions apply:
• Applicants are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of Erasmus Mundus eligible applicant countries above.
• Students can apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship to the EMMCs of their choice but the number of applications must be limited to maximum three courses.
• Individuals who have already benefited from an EMMC scholarship are not eligible for a second scholarship in order to follow the same or another EMMC.
• Students benefiting from an EMMC scholarship cannot benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus masters studies.
• EMMC students scholarships are awarded exclusively for a full-time enrolment in one of the course editions.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Students will be selected on the basis of their academic merits, language skills (English) and international test results (GRE). Priority will be given to applicants whose background and interest match closely with those of MERIT.

MERIT is comitted to promote a balanced gender participation in the course, access to disadvantaged students and to students with disabilities or special needs. As such, in case students of different gender are ranked equally, the tie would be resolved in favour of the less represented gender in the scholarship or admitted list. Also, students with disabilities or special needs are subject to a more favourable evaluation in the setection process and, if selected, might qualify for additional funding from the Erasmus Mundus programme. DURATION, CONDITIONS AND AMOUNT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships will be awarded for two years conditioned on a successful performance of the student. Students will receive a yearly payment of € 4.000 Euro as contribution to travel and installation cost and a monthly allowance of € 1.000 for a total of 24 months. Tuition fees and insurance coverage will be paid directly from the Erasmus Mundus programme. Note however that, if the scholarship is granted, no payments will be made until the grant recipient arrives at the host university. No payment advances will be sent abroad for covering travel and moving expenses.

FRAMEWORK
MERIT is a multi-track research oriented Master programme within the guidelines of the Bologna process whose scope is Information and Communication Technologies. The MERIT academic program is organized in 3 Areas of Knowledge and their corresponding 9Specialisation tracks which can be studied in any two of the institutions indicated below:

c) Multimedia Signal Processing (UPC, KTH, UCL)
8. Image and Video Processing (UPC , UCL)
9. Speech and Language Technologies (UPC, KTH)
Students applying for the MERIT Erasmus Mundus Category A student scholarships must include up to 4 specialization options which can be:
a) Any of the 9 specialization tracks.
b) Any of the 3 AoK.
c) Indifferent.
In addition, students should also indicate which university they prefer, if any, for the second year of studies.
ELIGIBILITY
Applications are sought from students in their final year of university programs in electrical engineering or an equivalent university degree involving at least 3 years of coursework (equivalent to 180 ECTS). Priority will be given to applicants whose background and interest match closely with those of MERIT. In any case, applicants should hold a university degree by September 1st 2010.
Applicants of MERIT Erasmus Mundus Category A student scholarships should qualify as third-country nationals, as defined in the Erasmus Mundus programme, i.e., nationals of all countries of the world with the exception of the Erasmus Mundus eligible applicant countries: the 27 EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom), the EEA-EFTA States (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway).
Additional MERIT Erasmus Mundus Category A student scholarships (up to 2) will be assigned to students from the “Western Balkans and Turkey Window”, i.e. nationals of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244/99, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey.
The following restrictions apply:
• Applicants are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of Erasmus Mundus eligible applicant countries above.
• Students can apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship to the EMMCs of their choice but the number of applications must be limited to maximum three courses.
• Individuals who have already benefited from an EMMC scholarship are not eligible for a second scholarship in order to follow the same or another EMMC.
• Students benefiting from an EMMC scholarship cannot benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus masters studies.
• EMMC students scholarships are awarded exclusively for a full-time enrolment in one of the course editions.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Students will be selected on the basis of their academic merits, language skills (English) and international test results (GRE). Priority will be given to applicants whose background and interest match closely with those of MERIT.

In the case that the applicant has taken the GRE general test and, possibly, the GRE subject test in mathematics, scores from these tests should be sent to UPC directly by the organization administering these tests (ETS). To request this you should use the GRE institution code corresponding to UPC (7124). See http://www.gre.org for details.
MERIT is comitted to promote a balanced gender participation in the course, access to disadvantaged students and to students with disabilities or special needs. As such, in case students of different gender are ranked equally, the tie would be resolved in favour of the less represented gender in the scholarship or admitted list. Also, students with disabilities or special needs are subject to a more favourable evaluation in the setection process and, if selected, might qualify for additional funding from the Erasmus Mundus programme. Applicants are given the possibilty to include information regarding any sort of disability in their application form.
DURATION, CONDITIONS AND AMOUNT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships will be awarded for two years conditioned on a successful performance of the student. Students will receive a yearly payment of € 4.000 Euro as contribution to travel and installation cost and a monthly allowance of € 1.000 for a total of 24 months. Tuition fees and insurance coverage will be paid directly from the Erasmus Mundus programme. Note however that, if the scholarship is granted, no payments will be made until the grant recipient arrives at the host university. No payment advances will be sent abroad for covering travel and moving expenses.

• Notification of Scholarships: April-May 2010.
• Start of MERIT studies: August-September 2010.
APPLICATION-SUBMISSION
Application for MERIT Erasmus Mundus Category A student scholarships requires uploading personal data and electronic copies of supporting documents in the MERIT Erasmus Mundus Online Application Tool (MEAT):

This tool supports most current web-browsing software, and will be used to check the applicant’s eligibility, get his/her contact data, and upload relevant files such as CV, etc. MEAT allows applicants to enter their personal data and the electronic versions of documents to support the application (CVs, copies of academic certificates, recommendation letters, etc.). Only PDF format will be allowed for upload to MEAT (a single file for each item).
INFORMATION TO BE PROVIDED
MEAT will prompt the applicant to enter/upload the following information:
1. Citizenship and country of residence.
2. Periods of stay in Europe during the last 5 years (if any).
3. University degrees (held or currently studying) and universities where those degrees where obtained.
4. Gender / Name/ Email / Birth date / Postal address
5. Disabilities (if any)
6. (Optional) GRE exam codes and GRE exam dates (General and subject test in mathematics).
7. Scanned image of your passport showing your picture (PDF).
8. CV-Resume (PDF)
9. (Optional) Name of a MERIT faculty member who knows you and knows the most relevant items in your CV1
10. Academic certificates (school certificate/diploma, University transcripts, University degree certificate) relevant to MERIT topics. All university transcripts must in English and should be uploaded into MEAT as a single PDF file.
11. Description of the contents of the courses taken to obtain the degree of the previous point. It is of utmost importance to state any subject, experience or work related to MERIT areas of knowledge.
12. Up to 4 specialisation options.
13. Motivation letter, in which the applicant explains in English the reasons to study MERIT and how they relate to his/her career goals.
14. Proof of proficiency in English. TOEFL and IELTS certificates are preferred.
15. Order of preference of the 5 MERIT institutions for the second year of studies. Note that MERIT master thesis, is undertaken at the second year university.

Master's course: Applied Ethics, Erasmus Mundus
Students from outside the European Union - third country students - can apply for Erasmus mundus Masters Course in Applied Ethics Scholarships.
This Erasmus Mundus Masters Course is offered by Linköping University, The Centre for Applied Ethics, (Sweden), Utrecht University, the Ethics Institute, (The Netherlands), and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department Philosophy, Programme for Applied Ethics (Trondheim, Norway).
Admissions requirements
General requirements for admission to the programme are a Bachelor's degree, or a professional degree (equivalent) covering at least three years of study.
The applicants must submit a paper in which they demonstrate basic knowledge of ethical theories and their affinity with ethical questions.
Students who do not have English as their first language must document their proficiency in English by submitting results from a TOEFL test or another internationally recognised test.
Selection of candidates for admission:
The MAE Consortium Selection Committee will rank the applicants and put forward a proposal to the degree-awarding institutions regarding preferred candidates.
The selection is mainly based on previous academic performance.
Selection of Erasmus Mundus scholarship holders:
The MAE Consortium Selection Committee will rank the applicants, and The European Commission will take the final decision regarding the awarding of the scholarships.
The main selection criterion will be the quality of the student's previous academic performance but the selection is also based on the criteria stipulated for exemple regarding geographical distribution of candidates.

MA Programme Euroculture
The MA Programme Euroculture has been selected by the European Commission among the Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses for five years. This implies that the European Commission will grant scholarships to highly qualified third-country graduate students and scholars. Students will be able to follow the MA Programme Euroculture, and scholars to carry out teaching and research assignments and scholarly work in the Euroculture universities participating in the Course.
Third-country students and scholars eligible for receiving an Erasmus Mundus scholarship fall into two different categories: one general category in which grantees can come from any third country and one specific category for 2010-2011: the "Western Balkans and Turkey Window" in which funds are earmarked for nationals from specific countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244/99, as well as the three candidate countries, namely Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey.
With regard to the number of available scholarships, the Euroculture Erasmus Mundus Masters Consortium will reserve 10 places for third-country students (of which a maximum of 2 places can be granted to students from the Western Balkans and Turkey) who have been granted a scholarship for the academic year 2010/2011.
With regard to the specific category ("Asian windows") in 2006, the Euroculture Masters Consortium selected 9 additional Asian students who have been granted a bursary for the academic year 2006/2007. For 2007/2008 the Euroculture consortium had the possibility to select at least 6 additional Asian students. For 2009/2010 the Euroculture consortium was able to select two students from the Western Balkans and Turkey through the special window.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION FOR AN ERASMUS MUNDUS SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE COURSE 2010/2011 : 15 December 2009
"Third-country student/scholar" refers to students and scholars who hold the nationality of a third country other than those from EEA- EFTA States and candidate countries for accession to the European Union; who is not a resident of any of the Member States or the participating countries as provided for in Article 11; who has not carried out his or her main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the Member States or the participating countries; and who has outstanding academic and/or professional experience.
According to the European Commission, each student grantee will receive EUR 10,000 to cover the registration fee plus EUR 1,600 each month for sixteen months for living costs. Each scholar grantee will receive EUR 4,000 each month for a period of 3 months and a fixed amount of EUR 1,000.
PLEASE NOTE: Students are not allowed to apply to more than three Erasmus Mundus Master programmes.

The final award is a multiple degree between all three institutions. The partners equally contribute to the whole programme and share responsibility for its delivery.
The programme starts in Sweden in late August for the first semester before moving to the UK. Students spend the first term of the second year in Norway before spending the last semester in the most appropriate country to complete their dissertations. The programme requires successful completion of 120 ECTS (UK equivalent is 240 credits at master’s level).
