Call for Applications for the 2009/2010 Academic Year
The project offers international students the possibility to receive a scholarship and other benefits to graduate from the Politecnico di Torino attending a Bachelor of Science (BS) program in Textile Engineering at the Biella campus.
The initiative is promoted by the Politecnico di Torino and is supported by Camera di Commercio di Biella, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Biella and
Unione Industriale Biellese.

Requirements
Having not Italian citizenship or being an Italian citizen who has obtained a secondary school diploma abroad
Being at least 18 years old (by 01/09/2009)
Meeting the minimum requirements for the admission to Italian university. For further information, please visit the Entry requirements page.
In the countries where it is required, having successfully passed the state-level university admission exam (e.g. Gao Kao in China)
Knowledge of the English language, preferably demonstrated by an international certification (students who do not provide such certification may be asked to conduct a telephone interview to test their knowledge of English)
Not having enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program of the Politecnico di Torino before the 2009/2010 academic year
Not being the recipient of other scholarships, Italian or foreign.
Obtaining a degree at the Politecnico di Torino
To graduate at the Politecnico di Torino, students must attain a total of 180 credits, including exams and the final dissertation. The time required to graduate is approximately 6 semesters. However, the effective duration is also dependent upon each student’s capacity.
Please note that scholarship recipients must attend their program for its entire length (3 years – 180 credits). Students who have already attended other university courses can ask for a credit transfer up to a maximum of 10 credits per year (30 credits in total). Please note that credits achieved in preparatory courses or in the first year/second year in systems where preuniversity education lasts 10/11 years can not be taken into account.
Scholarships
Selection criteria
Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career and on their Curriculum Vitae.
Amount of the scholarship
The gross amount of the Biella Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro per year (30.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission, within 10 days from the arrival in Italy of the student, of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the online form (see the “Selection outcomes” section below).
Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy; for this reason, the first instalment is not paid at the moment of arrival at the Politecnico di Torino, but in the course of the following months (most probably November).
Requirements to maintain the scholarship
Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study grant while receiving the Biella Campus scholarship must promptly notify the Politecnico di Torino.
Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.

Method: fill in the online application form by first registering and providing your biographical information, logging in and choosing your level and degree program, and subsequently submitting the application. Students must also provide information on their previous educational career, language abilities and work experience, and they must attach the necessary documentation in pdf format. After having completed these steps, the application for a scholarship will be considered complete.
N.B. The scholarship or project for which the applicant is eligible is not specified in the application form, since the Politecnico will automatically assess your eligibility for the Biella Campus scholarship based on the information you provide. At the end of the selection process, the Politecnico di Torino will inform you if you have been selected for a Biella Campus scholarship (see the “Selection outcomes” section below).

Secondary School Diploma*
For students from the countries where it is required, a certificate showing that the state-level university admission exam (e.g. Gao Kao in China) has been passed**
For students from a national school system in which preuniversity education lasts for less than 12 years: a transcript that demonstrates that all the exams in the student’s program of study have been passed (1 or 2 years, depending on whether the national school system lasts for 11 or 10 years, respectively) OR, for students who have enrolled in a post-secondary institution, a certificate that demonstrates the attainment of a post-diploma degree

The above documents must be rendered in English (preferably), Italian, French, or Spanish.

We emphasise that the data shown in the documents must coincide with those inserted in the online application form. Moreover, failure to attach even one of the above documents will result in exclusion from the selection process.
Selection outcomes
Following the closure of the online application form, a special commission will meet to assess the applications.
At the end of the selection process, a provisional list of standings will be composed with the names of the students who have been awarded a scholarship and the names of the eligible applicants that may be awarded a scholarship in the event of one or more renunciations.
The list of standings will be affixed to the Official Register of the Politecnico di Torino. At the beginning of May 2009, information about where and how to access the selection outcomes will be published on this project website and on the Apply@Polito section of the Politecnico website.

The scholarship awardees and eligible applicants who wish to confirm their position must take the following steps:
download the scholarship acceptance form which will be published together with the list of selection outcomes, fill it in and fax it to the number +39 011 090 6329. Failure to send in the acceptance fax within the given period will constitute a definitive renunciation and the scholarship will be reassigned accordingly.
upon arrival in Italy scholarship recipients must hand in the original documentation, which was previously attached to the online application form (see the above list), to the Politecnico di Torino. Before handing in the aforementioned documentation, we recommend that you make photocopies for yourself. We ask that you not hand in any other documentation other than that which has been required, and put all the documentation in a single folder bearing your name, surname and "Biella Campus project". We reemphasize that the information given in the documents must correspond to that attached to the online application form. Failure to hand in the original documentation within 10 days from the student’s arrival according to the above conditions will result in the non-allocation of the scholarship.
Publication of the final list of standings is foreseen for May 2009.

In all the e-mail messages and the correspondence sent to the Politecnico following the awarding of the scholarship, the recipient must clearly specify "Biella Campus project".
Once you have sent your confirmation of scholarship acceptance and processed your application for a Study Visa at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence (only if you are a citizens of a country which is not member of EU and if you do not reside in Italy), we ask that you send us by fax at 00 39 011 090 8644 and no later than July 3rd, 2009, a copy of your passport along with the approximate date of arrival in Italy which should be scheduled for the beginning of September 2009.
Facilities
The amount of tuition fees for the 2009/2010 academic year is about 1700 Euro. Students from low-income families can be entitled to a reduction or a waiver of tuition fees. In order to obtain such benefit, students must provide an official declaration about:
the composition of their family unit
the revenue generated abroad in 2008
the property and real estate assets generated abroad at December 31st, 2008
These declarations, issued by the competent authorities of the foreign country where the family's income is generated, must be translated into Italian and certified by the Italian Embassy or Consulate. Please see also: Information for students coming from particularly poor countries.
Scholarship recipients, together with the Bachelor of Science course, will benefit from:
an intensive Italian language course, compulsory and free of charge
advice on lodging facilities (for more information visit the Accommodation section)
additional services offered to the student community (access to the Politecnico libraries and computer laboratories, WI-FI (wireless LAN) , etc.); scholarship recipients will also be entitled to all the services offered by the regional university student assistance organisation, Ente regionale per il DIritto allo Studio Universitario (EDISU Piemonte ) at full fee: student canteen service, cultural and recreational activities, sports activities, libraries with lending service, etc. (for more information visit the Campus Facilities section)

Notes
The scholarship does not include accommodation costs, which are thus totally at the expense of the student.
The Politecnico di Torino does not guarantee any type of accommodation for Biella Campus scholarship recipients. For students turning to the private market to rent an apartment, the initial amount requested for the cautionary deposit is equal to about three months rent, plus any fees charged by the real estate agency, if applicable. The approximate amount of the rent for an apartment shared with other students comes to about 250 EURO/month per person, and the rent for a small/medium sized apartment is about 500 EURO/month.
Enrolment at the Politecnico includes insurance coverage for accidents occurring on the university premises.
Medical insurance for emergencies (First Aid), as required by the law for non-EU citizens, is about 100 EURO per year. Upon their arrival in Italy, students must pay this amount to INA Assitalia: this is required for the conversion of the entry visa into a residence permit. An Academy Profession (AP) degree programme normally lasts 2 years (120 ECTS credits). The programmes are offered at Academies of Professional Higher Education ( Erhvervsakademier ) throughout Denmark. AP degree programmes combine theory with practice and are suited to employment in business and industry. The qualifications also qualify graduates for further studies at universities.
Professional Bachelor's degree programme
Depending on the subject area, a Professional Bachelor's degree is awarded after 3 to 4½ years of successfully completed studies (180-270 ECTS credits). The programmes are offered at University Colleges ( Professionshøjskoler ). University colleges combine theoretical study with practical appli-cation in a range of subject areas. Study is based on a combination of lectures, seminars, project work and group activities. Work placements are always included in the programmes, which prepare you to enter specific professions. Most of the Professional Bachelor’s degrees also qualify graduates to apply for post-graduate studies.
What kind of financial support can I apply for?
The scholarship covers annual tuition fees and a maintenance grant towards your living costs. The grant is approximately DKK 5,000 (approximately 650 Euro) per month.
How and when do I apply?
If you would like to apply for a scholarship, we would strongly recommend you do the following:
1. Look at the list of subject areas included in the scholarship scheme to find an interesting study programme, which you are qualified to apply to.
2. Contact the institution which offers the specific study programme you are interested in. The institution will then provide you with the application form. The institution can also inform you about entry requirements, course descriptions, deadlines and student services.
3. Complete the application form and send it to the institution you are applying to. Guidelines are included on the application form. If you require further information or guidelines, please have a look at the template version provided by CIRIUS.
4. Apply for a residence permit. Read the instructions below.

When will I be notified about the outcome of my application?
The institution will assess all applications and send a shortlist of candidates to CIRIUS – The National Agency for Internationalisation of Education and Training. CIRIUS and the Danish Ministry of Education will then undertake the final selection. As soon as this process is finalised, the applicants will be notified by the institution where they have applied for a scholarship
How do I apply for a residence permit?
The procedures vary depending on your nationality. Students from outside the EU/EEA should note that they have to apply for the residence permit in their home country. There are also certain financial requirements attached to the process. You can find more information about residence permit in English on the home page of the Danish Immigration Service .
What are my obligations if I am awarded a scholarship?
If you are awarded a scholarship, you are required to follow the programme that you have been awarded a scholarship for. It is not normally possible to transfer your scholarship to another institution. If you do not pass your exams, the scholarship will normally be suspended, except for in exceptional circumstances, e.g. illness, etc. You are also required to submit an annual report with an evaluation of your study experience and stay in Denmark.

Ernest Makulilo teaches children in W.Virginia about Tanzania
Fulbright FLTA 08 Ernest Makulilo teaches children in West Virginia about Tanzania.
On October 9, 2008 Fulbright FLTA Ernest Makulilo talked about Tanzania to 300 primary school children at Spring Hill Elementary School in Huntington City, West Virginia. Makulilo talked about Tanzanian culture in general, the meaning of the colours of the flag of Tanzania, and about the Maasai tribe. He demonstrated how the Maasai dress by dressing two of the students in the Maasai Shukas. He also taught them a few words of Kiswahili; their favorites were “Mwalimu”, “Asante” , and “Rafiki” . The event was organized by the Huntington Museum of Art as part of their two-month exhibition on African Art.
The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program takes young graduate English teachers to the U.S. to teach their native Kiswahili and study at U.S. institutions for a year. The program is a fellowship under the U.S. Government funded Fulbright international exchange program and aims to foster mutual understanding between Tanzania and the United States. Makulilo teaches Kiswahili and a class called “Global Connections: Discover Africa” at Marshall University in West Virginia.

Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program (FLTA) 2010-2011

Information sessions will be held at the U.S. Embassy March 11-12, 2009. Sessions will last three hours; you may only attend one session. No registration is required. Please note that bags, briefcases, cigarette lighters, weapons and electronic items including cameras and cell phones are among items not permitted into the Embassy.

The Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State. Teaching Assistants are vetted through the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. The program aims to strengthen U.S. foreign language instruction and promote mutual understanding by establishing a foreign language native speaker expertise on U.S. campuses. The program enables the teaching assistants to complete their home country pre-service training by engaging in non-degree studies at accredited post-secondary U.S. educational institutions while teaching one or two language courses. Additionally they serve as resource persons in conversation groups, cultural representatives, attendants in language laboratories, coordinators of extracurricular activities or supervisors of clubs and language houses.Selected teaching assistants will enjoy Fulbright status in the United Status. They are expected to teach their language/culture for up to 20 hours per week while taking two courses per semester. All FLTA's receive room and board, a monthly stipend, and tuition waiver for the required coursework, in addition to Fulbright immigration services. The Fulbright grant is for one academic year and is non-renewable.
The Institute of International Education (IIE) on behalf of Department of State, USA, would like to place several language teaching assistants at universities and colleges in the US as part of a strategic language initiative.
Kiswahili is one of the targeted languages.

The Office of Academic Exchange Programs in the U.S. Department of State will fund grants for up to three years for this award. After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D. Placement of students will be handled by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
Applicants must be residents and citizens of Tanzania and must apply through the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Public Affairs in Dar es Salaam. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree and be eligible for a doctoral degree before August 1, 2009, and be proficient in English. The best applicants work for institutions that are contributing to Tanzania’s development in science, technology and engineering and who work in hard sciences. This program is not for simple theoretical study. Successful candidates are usually scientists who are leaders in their respective fields and people who are making a difference in Tanzania and have the support of their employers to apply for the program. In addition, candidates should have strong inter-personal skills and the ability to share Tanzanian culture with others. Short-listed candidates will be required to sit for TOEFL, GRE and when necessary, GRE Subject Tests.
Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for an interview that will take place in early May. Short-listed candidates will be asked to sit for appropriate tests and complete other necessary paperwork and will then be nominated for the worldwide competition. IIE will be responsible for placement of all Fulbright Science and Technology Award recipients. IIE will work closely with the recipients and the U.S. State Department to ensure the best placement available for field of study and research interests.
All grantees receive tuition, a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support, and specially tailored enrichment activities, and are eligible to apply for additional research funding. After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D.

Recent (within three years) recipients of Fulbright grants are not eligible to apply, and it should be emphasized that funding is for a maximum period of two years only. It is important to note that doctoral degree candidates will typically need to secure additional funding to complete their course of study.

Applicants who wish to pursue study in a field other than their current field of study must demonstrate adequate background in that field.
4. Applicants must be affiliated with or committed to working at an academic institution or a public or private institution in Tanzania upon return, and should have the endorsement of their home institution.
5. Applicants must have a sufficiently high level of English proficiency to enable them to complete a full-time program of graduate study in the United States.
In Tanzania, the Fulbright Junior Staff Development Program is administered by the U.S. Embassy's Public Affairs Section, which nominates candidates to the Fulbright Scholarship Board in Washington, DC. The Fulbright Scholarship Board makes the final selection of candidates. In order for the Embassy to complete the nomination process before the deadline date for submission, we urge aspiring candidates to submit their applications to the Embassy by May 1, 2009; applications received after this date will not be considered.

LGBT and Human Rights - International Training Programme 2009/2010
Stockholm, Sweden, October 26-November 13, 2009, Africa region June 14-18, 2010, and Asia region May 31-June 4, 2010.
In 2009/2010, RFSL together with RFSU (The Swedish Association for Sexuality Education) is organising an international training programme on LGBT and human rights with funding from Sida (The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency). This will be the third year a training programme in this format will be organised. The 2009/2010 training programme is divided into into two sections, with participants from Africa participating in one of the sections and participants from Asia participating in the other.The closing dates to apply for this year's course is April 3 (Asia section) and April 17 (Africa section).
The training programme will include topics such as:
- Sexualities, Norms and Genders
- Human Rights and Protection for LGBT Persons
- Supporting LGBT in Practice
Requested qualifications are:
- A minimum of three years workinge experience in either LGBT or Human Rights’ field.
- Academic degree in social sciences, law, public health or related fields of study.
In 2007/2008 and 2008/2009, persons from the following countries participated: Bangladesh, China, Georgia, India, Indonesia,
Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey and Ukraine.
The Asian section 2009/2010 is open only for application by participants from the following countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
