Course description:
Building on the existing strengths of six leading European universities, this Masters programme in Economy, State & Society situates the study of the emerging economies and societies of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in a global context. The multidisciplinary, language-based programme is
organised along four tracks: Economics & Business; Politics & Security; Nation & Society; and History & Culture.
The states of CEE have undergone far-reaching political, economic and social change since 1989, culminating in the 2004 and 2007 European Union enlargements. Understanding the comparative economic advantages of the CEE states, their relationship with the EU border states, the importance of
migration flows, health and security for the wider region as well as the obstacles faced in developing a truly knowledge-based economy are essential both for the European and the global community.
This MA will raise the global expertise in this area by addressing these key issues in the context of the region’s economies, states and societies.
Participants spend the first year at University College London and the second at a university in the CEE country whose language they have been studying. In year 1: all students: study a language; take electives relating to their specialist track; undertake research methodology courses; and participate in a variety of research skills modules – including ‘Academic writing in English’. In year 2, students continue to receive language training, produce a 15-20,000-word research dissertation in English and take additional specialised electives. All non-language elements of the course are conducted in English.
Graduates of the programme will have acquired language competence, cultural awareness and a deeprooted knowledge and understanding of the economies, states and societies of CEE. Graduates will have developed a set of skills suited to entering a career in the private or public sectors or for developing a research career in academia.
Who is IMESS for?
The Masters programme is designed to attract and challenge the brightest international students (final year undergraduates may apply) as well as professionals wishing to retrain to achieve European expertise and meet the challenges of the changing global environment. Students from all countries may apply to the programme. Evidence of English language ability is essential but there are no other language pre-requisites. Non-EU students, including those from candidate countries (Turkey, Croatia, FYR Macedonia) are invited to apply for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship and there are also scholarship opportunities for EU students.
Additionally, for established International Scholars the IMESS consortium offers a number of three-month Research Fellowships to be spent at one of the consortium universities conducting research in the spirit of IMESS and contributing to the teaching of IMESS.
Erasmus Mundus Scholarships
The Erasmus Mundus (EM) scholarships are European Union funded scholarships to support non-EU students (EU students see below) in studying selected European Masters programmes, including IMESS.
For entry in 2009 there will be approximately 17 EM scholarships for non-EU students. In addition, applicants from the Western Balkans and Turkey, are invited to apply for an equivalent scholarship under a special EU regional 'window' targeting applicants from the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the FYR Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo (under UNSC Resolution 1244/99) and Turkey.
Scholarship applicants satisfying the Erasmus Mundus criteria are eligible to apply for one of a number of Erasmus Mundus Scholarships of €21,000 per year (€42,000 in total). Scholarship holders must pay tuition fees to the IMESS consortium of €14,800 per year (€29,600 in total). These monies will be deducted from the scholarship and scholarship holders will receive a balance on a quarterly basis.
The scholarship therefore covers the fees, associated with attendance at two of Europe's leading universities, but does NOT cover all of the costs associated with attending the Programme. Rather, participants will need some additional source of funding to cover the full costs associated with accommodation, food, travel and books. For example, in year one (all students are in London) it is estimated that the average living costs for a single graduate student for an academic year are approximately 12,000 Euros. Living costs in year 2 vary.
Erasmus Mundus scholarship holders will also benefit from the insurance provided through the European Executive Agency (full details at Erasmus Mundus Insurance). Students may wish to top up this insurance with a supplementary private policy.
The next Erasmus Mundus Scholarship application deadline for IMESS is January 21 2009 – UCL registry must have received your full application by no later than this date. Please note that students can only apply to a maximum of 3 Erasmus Mundus Programmes in any one year.

Journalism Fellowships
The Dag Hammarskjold Scholarship Fund for Journalists is now accepting applications
from professional journalists from developing countries for its Journalism Fellowships Program.
The Fellowships are available to radio, television, print and web journalists, age 25 to 35, from developing countries who are interested in coming to New York to report on international affairs during the 63rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The Fellowships will begin in mid-September and extend to late November and will include the cost of travel and accommodations in New York, as well as a per diem allowance.
The Fellowship Program is open to journalists who are native citizens of Africa and are currently working full-time for a bona fide media organization in a developing nation.
Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to international affairs and to conveying a better understanding of the United Nations to their readers and audiences.
They must also have approval from their media organizations to spend up to two months in New York to report from the United Nations.
The Fund will provide: round-trip airfare to New York; modest accommodations; health insurance for the duration of the fellowship, and a daily allowance to cover food and other necessities.

Human Rights Essay Competition
International Essay Competition Conference and workshop participation in Berlin.
The Irmgard Coninx Foundation is continuing its program on human rights with an international conferences and adjunct workshops to address the social, political, theoretical, and pragmatic issues of human rights today.
As in the years before the “Berlin Roundtables on Transnationalism” will start its new topic with an essay/working paper competition.

Global Journalism -Master Scholarship in Sweden
There are a limited number of full Global Journalism Scholarships on offer from the Swedish Development Agency and the Swedish Institute for needy and deserving students.
The scholarships are for study at Örebro University. These cover travel, accommodation, insurance and other living expenses during the time spent in Sweden.
The master in Global Journalism is a two-year programme for journalists wanting to further their journalistic knowledge and skills focusing on international news reporting.
The programme has a global focus and brings together professional journalists from Africa, Asia, North and South America, and North and Eastern Europe.
The programme is offered in cooperation with journalism educations in Denmark, Finland, and Norway, and parts of the programme are given at universities in these countries. The language of instruction is English.
Requirements • The applicant must have a completed Bachelor degree, comparable to a Swedish Bachelor degree, from an institution of higher education of three years or more. The Bachelor degree must be in a social science or a humanities subject.
• The applicant must also have at least two years of professional journalistic experience.
• The applicant must have knowledge in English.
Degree awarded: A Swedish "Magisterexamen med inriktning mot global journalistik", translated in to English as Degree of Master of Global Journalism.
