The School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Carleton University invites applications for admission to the MA program in Applied Language Studies for Fall Semester 2009. Excellent funding packages consisting of scholarships and teaching/research assistantships are available for qualified applicants.
Our MA program in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies is well known as a dynamic community of learning where students can
investigate the various areas of applied language research with faculty members who are involved in areas such as language teaching and learning, writing studies, literacy studies, genre studies, and critical discourse studies. Our faculty members’ broad-ranging expertise provides students with a unique and flexible program.
Our graduate program has been very successful in preparing students for a wide range of employment opportunities, as well as for PhD work.
Carleton University offers three possible program paths to complete the Master’s degree in Applied Language Studies: a Coursework path (equivalent of
10 one-term courses); a Research Essay path (equivalent of 8 one-term courses plus a Research Essay); a Thesis path (equivalent of 6 one-term courses plus a thesis).
Funding
The possibilities for financial aid and assistance are different depending on whether you are an entering student, or a continuing student.
For entering students
If you are entering the program and have a high academic standing, you can receive financial aid in the form of entrance scholarships and teaching assistantships. These funds are awarded by the Faculty of Graduate Studies based primarily on prior academic performance, and are not available for students entering a qualifying year program, for part time students, or for returning students.
If your application is received by March 1, and you have been accepted for full time study, you will automatically be considered for teaching assistantships and scholarships unless you indicate on your application that you do not wish to be considered. Decisions about funding for entering students are announced in April.
Entrance Scholarships
Entrance Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to entering students either in combination with TAships, or on their own. Entrance scholarships are normally given only for the first three terms of study in a 12 month period (i.e. Fall, Winter and Summer term).
Teaching Assistantships
Teaching Assistantships (TAships) provide students with employment in the university for a maximum of 10 hours a week during academic terms. If you are awarded a TAship, you will be provided up to two years of fall - winter term support (i.e. a maximum of four terms). A student may request that one of the supported terms be a summer term; however, such a request will only be granted if there is adequate demand for TAs. Partial TAships, requiring 5 hours a week rather than 10, are sometimes offered.
TAships are decided by the beginning of the term, and as far as is possible, placements are made according to the student's interests and/or program of study. Most TAs assist in the Writing Tutorial Service, in credit ESL classes, in Modern Language classes or in undergraduate courses in Linguistics and Applied Language Studies.

Tilburg University Scholarship Programme - Deadline 15th April
For the year 2009-2010 Tilburg University has 56 scholarships available for excellent international students who are admitted to a Master’s programme at Tilburg University (MA, MSc, LLM or MPhil).
Tilburg University Scholarships include (for the academic year 2009-2010):
A partial tuition waiver of € 7,812 for non-EEA students. Students pay only € 2,484 instead of the high graduate fee of € 10,296. EEA students pay the same fee as Dutch students, which is € 1,619.
€ 5,000 for the covering of living expenses for one academic year, both for EEA and non-EEA students.
To qualify for a Tilburg University Scholarship, candidates must fulfill the following admission requirements:
-Candidates must have graduated with excellent results in their Bachelor's programme
-Candidates must have scored at least 577 in the TOEFL paper based test, 233 in the TOEFL computer based test, or 90 in the TOEFL internet based test or alternatively 6.5 in the Academic IELTS test
-Candidates should provide two independent letters of reference
-Candidates must have been admitted to one of the Master's programmes at Tilburg University; they have to meet the particular programme's criteria
-Candidates must be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa, if applicable (see here for more information).
-Candidates are encouraged to apply for external scholarships like Huygens Scholarship Programme, Bappenas, Stuned and Netherlands Fellowship Programme as well. If a student receives an external scholarship, fully covering tuition waiver and living expenses, the Tilburg University Scholarship (including tuition waiver and living expenses) will be canceled. If an external scholarship would be less than the Tilburg University Scholarship, the Tilburg University Scholarship will be awarded partially.
When you apply for a Master's programme at Tilburg University you will automatically be considered for the Tilburg University Scholarship Programme. The application deadline for Master's programmes for both EEA and non-EEA students is April 15th, 2009.

Course description:
The University of Trento (Italy), the RWTH Aachen University (Germany), and the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) are offering a two-year Joint Masters Programme, named European Master in Informatics (EuMI). The objective is to educate professionals who will understand advanced techniques, tools, and methodologies in the field of Computer Science, and who will be able to put this knowledge into practice in key domains of application. In particular, EuMI offers three areas of specialisation in Net-Centric Informatics, Life-Science Informatics, and Embedded Systems Informatics. These are application domains that, being emergent, rapidly evolving, and of growing impact on the society, require specialised competencies not covered by more traditional degree programmes.
For each area of specialisation, a joint curriculum is defined which involves two Universities. The student undertaking the Erasmus Mundus Master’s curriculum will visit both Universities, taking courses focussing on advanced topics in theoretical and practical Computer Science within a selected area of specialisation. Courses are taught in English. Students will also have the opportunity to take courses on the culture and language of the visited European countries. At the end of the programme, a Master’s Thesis will be prepared on a research topic jointly selected with the two host Universities.
On the successful completion of EuMi, students will be awarded a Master of Informatics and will receive a degree from each of the Universities where they spent a part of their study: a “Laurea Specialistica in Informatica” (“Specialist Degree in Computer Science”) by the University of Trento,
a “Master of Science in Computer Science” by RWTH Aachen University, a “Master of Science in Informatics” by the University of Edinburgh.
The EuMI programme is intended for a small number of top-level international students. In order to guarantee a ratio between the teachers involved in the Joint Master and the EuMI students of close to one, a maximum of 30 students per year will be selected. Candidates should have a solid background in basic Computer Science disciplines and a keen interest in the fields of Net-Centric Informatics, Embedded Systems Informatics, or Life-Sciences Informatics. Prerequisites are a first level degree in Computer Science or closely-related disciplines and a fluent knowledge of spoken and written English.
Admission requirements and selection criteria
Students are accepted in the program regardless of sex, age, or nationality. A student to be accepted must fulfil the following requirements:
* A first level (at least three years) degree in Computer Science or closely related disciplines, awarded by an internationally recognised university-level institution.
Students who have not yet completed their first degree, but expect to graduate before August 31 2008 can apply provided that they will obtain the degree and supply the EuMI secretariat with a degree certificate by August 31.
* Fluent written and spoken English knowledge, certified by either an IELTS score of at least 6.0, a TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based) / 217 (computer-based) / 81 (internet-based) or CAE score of at least C; students with higher English scores (IELTS 6.5; TOEFL 580 / 237 / 88; CAE B or A) will be preferred. Student who have not yet a certificate, but who expect to have it before August 31, can apply to EuMI. If selected, the admission will be conditional on the receipt of the English certificate by EuMI before August 31.
Applicants who are Nationals of the exonerated Countries (please see list in the FAQ ) do not have to submit a language certificates. IF YOU ARE NOT IN THE EXONERATED LIST, YOU NEED AN OFFICIAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE CERTIFICATE, EVEN IN CASE OF ENGLISH SPEAKING ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES.

United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme
The 2009 United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme will take place in the Peace Palace in The Hague/Netherlands from 6 July to 14 August 2009.
The 2009 Fellowship Programme will be conducted in English. Fluency in spoken and written English is required. The next Fellowship Programme in French will take place in 2010.
Candidates from the following countries, which were granted fellowships in 2008, are not eligible to apply for a fellowship in 2009:
Botswana, Brazil, China, Ecuador, the Gambia, Ghana, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Malawi, Mexico, Montenegro, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Saint Lucia and South Africa.

Course Content
The Programme comprises participation in seminars, attendance of lectures at The Hague Academy of International Law, as well as study visits.
Subjects on the course curriculum may include the following topics:
Law of Treaties, Intellectual Property Law, Law of the Sea, International Protection of Human Rights, Refugee Law, International Criminal Law, International Environmental Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Investment Law, Law of International Watercourses, International Trade Law, Recent Developments in International Law.
Financial Arrangements and Accommodation
The Programme will cover the fellowship recipient’s travel costs in economy class as well as medical insurance, the training material and the registration fee for The Hague Academy of International Law. In accordance with policies and procedures governing the administration of United Nations fellowships, participants will receive a stipend to cover their living expenses. Accommodation will also be provided by the Programme.
Additional places will be made available on a self-financed basis for participants who will have to take care of all the costs associated with their participation (travel, accommodation, living expenses, registration fee for The Hague Academy of International Law).
