H.J. Heinz Company Foundation Fellowship

About the Fellowship
The Heinz Fellowship was established in 1982 by an endowment from the H. J. Heinz Company Foundation to the University of Pittsburgh's University Center for International Studies. The Fellowship is managed by the Global Studies Program at the University Center for International Studies, and is offered annually providing one year of practical, professional, and non-degree educational experiences through the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, USA. The University of Pittsburgh is one of the leading research universities in the United States and includes 16 professional schools, 28 departments in the arts, social and natural sciences, 3,400 faculty members, 27,000 students, and library holdings of over 4.7 million volumes. Pitt is located in an urban center of cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity.

Heinz Fellowships are granted to individuals from developing countries who demonstrate potential as future leaders in the public, government, non-profit, or private sectors. The goal is to improve, early in a career, the Fellows' capacity to contribute to the development of their country and to enhance their understanding of the United States. This is accomplished through a year of sitting in on selected courses and participating in practical professional activities while based in Pittsburgh. Upon acceptance of their final report, Fellows will receive a program certificate from the University Center for International Studies. This is non-degree program. Courses are observed on an informal basis, and do not earn credit towards any academic degree.

Fellows will receive a living stipend of $18,000 (paid in monthly installments), mandatory health insurance, round-trip transportation to and from Pittsburgh, and a $2,000 program and professional activities fund. Please note that, if the Fellow comes from a country which does not have a tax treaty with the U.S., the Fellow must pay U.S. taxes amounting to 14% of the stipend. No transportation costs, living allowances, or insurance funds are provided for dependents. The Fellowship does not include allowances or services for dependents, whether or not they accompany the Fellow. As a condition of the grant, applicants will be required to submit a statement of their ability to finance the transportation and maintenance expenses for any accompanying dependents. Please note that U.S. government visa restrictions make employment opportunities for dependents rare.

Eligibility
The Heinz Fellowship competition is open to men and women from developing countries who are early in their careers and whose record of accomplishment indicates strong potential for leadership and achievement in business, government, public service, or other relevant professions upon return to their home country.

1. Applicants must have completed a university degree by the application deadline.

2. Applicants must be suitably proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English, but cannot be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America.

3. Preference will be given to applicants who have already demonstrated leadership potential early in their career.

4. The fellowship is intended for individuals in the practitioner/policy domains. It is not awarded for basic academic research, academic sabbaticals, nor for medical research or updating. It is not a degree granting program.

5. Applicants should give evidence of current leadership in one of the following areas:

Sustainable Development: For example, issues of population growth, economic development, education, environmental change.

Governance: Including the development of the legal system, the extension and institutionalization of fundamental rights, the development of civil society, or the development of the voluntary sector.

Public Health: Local and national approaches towards infectious diseases, development of health services, family planning.

Conflict Resolution: Arms control and conflict resolution efforts at the local and regional level.

Fellow Obligations
Within the first month of arrival, the Fellow will develop and submit a plan of work which identifies the ways and means of sharpening existing professional expertise during the Fellowship residency. A progress report should be submitted at the end of the first semester, and a final report turned in at the end of the Fellowship. Typically, Fellows attend courses within the University and participate in internships in Pittsburgh or elsewhere in the United States. Heinz Fellows will be able to draw on all these resources and will be aided by an academic mentor.

During the residency, the Fellow is expected to give at least one presentation on a subject related to his or her professional experience to members of the University. In addition, the Fellow is strongly encouraged to participate in community outreach activities in the region by lecturing about his or her home country to an audience of high school students or interested adults.

Acceptance of the grant by the candidate constitutes an agreement between the grantee and the University. It is expected that, barring unforeseen emergencies, grantees will remain for the full tenure of the award. A grantee who leaves the U.S. or terminates the grant at a date earlier than that specified in the grant authorization, without consent of the University, will be required to reimburse the University for any expenditures made by the University on the grantee’s behalf.

Upon completion of the Heinz Fellowship program, fellows are required to submit a final report describing and evaluating the full range of their activities and experiences during the Fellowship, as well as their plans for applying the Fellowship upon return to their home country. These reports are subsequently distributed to program officials at the University of Pittsburgh and to representatives at the H.J. Heinz Company Foundation. These reports will also be used as references for incoming Fellowship recipients.

2009-2010 Graduate Scholarship Application

Master's Degree, Educational Specialist Degree, and Post-Baccalaureate Certification Students
(Not School of Social Work Students, Speech-Language Pathology Students, and
Physician Assistant Students)
All material must be submitted by February 14, 2009.

Dear Scholarship Applicant,

All scholarship applications from prospective students received after the close of business on 2/14/2009 will be considered as late applications. Marywood University will review these applications on a discretionary, funds-available basis. By University policy we cannot accept late scholarship applications from current students and prospective international students.

Awards will be made on the basis of three factors: academic promise, normally represented by a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or a graduate GPA of 3.50; professional focus and commitment; and financial need (required for specific scholarships).

File a complete admissions application. It is fully expected that each prospective student who is a scholarship applicant will have a complete admissions application on file with the Office of Graduate Admissions by February 14, 2009. The admissions application provides the supporting documentation necessary to evaluate a scholarship application.

Complete the scholarship application electronically. The scholarship application itself is on a secure server. You must press "yes" if your browser asks you if you wish to display secure items, otherwise Marywood University will not receive any of the information you type on the application upon submission.

If you declare full-time status on the scholarship application, enrollment in nine or more credits in the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 semesters or what your graduate department defines as full enrollment in structured programs, and are awarded a full-time status scholarship and enroll for less than full-time registration in either of these semesters your scholarship award will be reduced.

If you declare part-time status on your scholarship application, The Committee on Graduate Scholarships expects part-time status students who are scholarship recipients to enroll in and maintain at least six credits in the fall semester and at least six credits in the spring semester. Part-time status scholarship recipients who fail to meet this requirement in a semester will have their scholarships rescinded for that semester.

Email a scholarship essay as a Microsoft Word document. Please type an essay (300-500 words) clarifying the relationship between your life-goals and graduate education at Marywood. Your essay will also be judged on depth of expression and use of the English language. Your essay must clearly address the following areas:

Describe your professional work background and experience.

Describe your community leadership activities. Indicate if a volunteer activity.

Describe any commendations and appreciation awards as well as undergraduate and graduate academic awards and honors.

Describe any special projects, demonstrations, workshops, recitals, exhibits, or whatever may be appropriate to your area to indicate your abilities and interests.

What are your short and long range career goals and objectives?

What attracted you to your Marywood program as a vehicle for achieving your goals?

Email the essay in Microsoft Word to gradscholarship@marywood.edu. Your essay should contain your name, social security number, and field of study at the top of the page.

If you have any questions about completing these forms, please contact Mr. Frank Falcone at gradscholarship@marywood.edu or (570) 348-6211 ext. 2356.

Scholarship selection results will be mailed in early April 2009. Scholarships are available for use beginning Fall 2009; they may only be used to defray tuition for Marywood courses.

Students awarded graduate assistantships for the 2009-2010 academic year who accept those positions are not eligible to receive scholarship awards as well.

Marywood University undergraduate students who are enrolled in formal five-year programs are automatically eligible for at least forty percent of their undergraduate merit award or higher for their fifth year of study at the graduate level provided they are admitted to the master's level by their academic department.

Neither scholarship nor assistantship awards are renewed automatically each year. It is the responsibility of the student to reapply each academic year.

If you have questions about graduate scholarship and graduate assistantship opportunities at Marywood University please contact me.

Scholarships for International Masters in Economy, State and Society

Scholarship: up to 42 000 Euros
Deadline: January 21, 2009
Open to: third countries citizens + Balkan countries students

Course description:
Building on the existing strengths of six leading European universities, this Masters programme in Economy, State & Society situates the study of the emerging economies and societies of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in a global context. The multidisciplinary, language-based programme is
organised along four tracks: Economics & Business; Politics & Security; Nation & Society; and History & Culture.

The states of CEE have undergone far-reaching political, economic and social change since 1989, culminating in the 2004 and 2007 European Union enlargements. Understanding the comparative economic advantages of the CEE states, their relationship with the EU border states, the importance of
migration flows, health and security for the wider region as well as the obstacles faced in developing a truly knowledge-based economy are essential both for the European and the global community.

This MA will raise the global expertise in this area by addressing these key issues in the context of the region’s economies, states and societies.
Participants spend the first year at University College London and the second at a university in the CEE country whose language they have been studying. In year 1: all students: study a language; take electives relating to their specialist track; undertake research methodology courses; and participate in a variety of research skills modules – including ‘Academic writing in English’. In year 2, students continue to receive language training, produce a 15-20,000-word research dissertation in English and take additional specialised electives. All non-language elements of the course are conducted in English.

Graduates of the programme will have acquired language competence, cultural awareness and a deeprooted knowledge and understanding of the economies, states and societies of CEE. Graduates will have developed a set of skills suited to entering a career in the private or public sectors or for developing a research career in academia.

Who is IMESS for?

The Masters programme is designed to attract and challenge the brightest international students (final year undergraduates may apply) as well as professionals wishing to retrain to achieve European expertise and meet the challenges of the changing global environment. Students from all countries may apply to the programme. Evidence of English language ability is essential but there are no other language pre-requisites. Non-EU students, including those from candidate countries (Turkey, Croatia, FYR Macedonia) are invited to apply for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship and there are also scholarship opportunities for EU students.

Additionally, for established International Scholars the IMESS consortium offers a number of three-month Research Fellowships to be spent at one of the consortium universities conducting research in the spirit of IMESS and contributing to the teaching of IMESS.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

The Erasmus Mundus (EM) scholarships are European Union funded scholarships to support non-EU students (EU students see below) in studying selected European Masters programmes, including IMESS.

For entry in 2009 there will be approximately 17 EM scholarships for non-EU students. In addition, applicants from the Western Balkans and Turkey, are invited to apply for an equivalent scholarship under a special EU regional 'window' targeting applicants from the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the FYR Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo (under UNSC Resolution 1244/99) and Turkey.

Scholarship applicants satisfying the Erasmus Mundus criteria are eligible to apply for one of a number of Erasmus Mundus Scholarships of €21,000 per year (€42,000 in total). Scholarship holders must pay tuition fees to the IMESS consortium of €14,800 per year (€29,600 in total). These monies will be deducted from the scholarship and scholarship holders will receive a balance on a quarterly basis.

The scholarship therefore covers the fees, associated with attendance at two of Europe's leading universities, but does NOT cover all of the costs associated with attending the Programme. Rather, participants will need some additional source of funding to cover the full costs associated with accommodation, food, travel and books. For example, in year one (all students are in London) it is estimated that the average living costs for a single graduate student for an academic year are approximately 12,000 Euros. Living costs in year 2 vary.

Erasmus Mundus scholarship holders will also benefit from the insurance provided through the European Executive Agency (full details at Erasmus Mundus Insurance). Students may wish to top up this insurance with a supplementary private policy.

The next Erasmus Mundus Scholarship application deadline for IMESS is January 21 2009 – UCL registry must have received your full application by no later than this date. Please note that students can only apply to a maximum of 3 Erasmus Mundus Programmes in any one year.

For full details on 'how to apply' please refer to the 'Application Process' page of this website.

For further details on the Erasmus Mundus scheme see the web page HERE or for a more student oriented perspective see HERE http://www.em-a.eu/home.html

Description:

The School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Carleton University invites applications for admission to the MA program in Applied Language Studies for Fall Semester 2009. Excellent funding packages consisting of scholarships and teaching/research assistantships are available for qualified applicants.

Our MA program in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies is well known as a dynamic community of learning where students can
investigate the various areas of applied language research with faculty members who are involved in areas such as language teaching and learning, writing studies, literacy studies, genre studies, and critical discourse studies. Our faculty members’ broad-ranging expertise provides students with a unique and flexible program.

Our graduate program has been very successful in preparing students for a wide range of employment opportunities, as well as for PhD work.

Carleton University offers three possible program paths to complete the Master’s degree in Applied Language Studies: a Coursework path (equivalent of
10 one-term courses); a Research Essay path (equivalent of 8 one-term courses plus a Research Essay); a Thesis path (equivalent of 6 one-term courses plus a thesis).

Funding

The possibilities for financial aid and assistance are different depending on whether you are an entering student, or a continuing student.
For entering students

If you are entering the program and have a high academic standing, you can receive financial aid in the form of entrance scholarships and teaching assistantships. These funds are awarded by the Faculty of Graduate Studies based primarily on prior academic performance, and are not available for students entering a qualifying year program, for part time students, or for returning students.

If your application is received by March 1, and you have been accepted for full time study, you will automatically be considered for teaching assistantships and scholarships unless you indicate on your application that you do not wish to be considered. Decisions about funding for entering students are announced in April.

Entrance Scholarships
Entrance Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to entering students either in combination with TAships, or on their own. Entrance scholarships are normally given only for the first three terms of study in a 12 month period (i.e. Fall, Winter and Summer term).

Teaching Assistantships
Teaching Assistantships (TAships) provide students with employment in the university for a maximum of 10 hours a week during academic terms. If you are awarded a TAship, you will be provided up to two years of fall - winter term support (i.e. a maximum of four terms). A student may request that one of the supported terms be a summer term; however, such a request will only be granted if there is adequate demand for TAs. Partial TAships, requiring 5 hours a week rather than 10, are sometimes offered.

TAships are decided by the beginning of the term, and as far as is possible, placements are made according to the student's interests and/or program of study. Most TAs assist in the Writing Tutorial Service, in credit ESL classes, in Modern Language classes or in undergraduate courses in Linguistics and Applied Language Studies.

European Master in Informatics (EuMi)

Wednesday, 20 May 2009 20:11

Scholarship: up to 42 000 euros
Deadline: May 20,2009
Open to: non-EU students

Course description:
The University of Trento (Italy), the RWTH Aachen University (Germany), and the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) are offering a two-year Joint Masters Programme, named European Master in Informatics (EuMI). The objective is to educate professionals who will understand advanced techniques, tools, and methodologies in the field of Computer Science, and who will be able to put this knowledge into practice in key domains of application. In particular, EuMI offers three areas of specialisation in Net-Centric Informatics, Life-Science Informatics, and Embedded Systems Informatics. These are application domains that, being emergent, rapidly evolving, and of growing impact on the society, require specialised competencies not covered by more traditional degree programmes.

For each area of specialisation, a joint curriculum is defined which involves two Universities. The student undertaking the Erasmus Mundus Master’s curriculum will visit both Universities, taking courses focussing on advanced topics in theoretical and practical Computer Science within a selected area of specialisation. Courses are taught in English. Students will also have the opportunity to take courses on the culture and language of the visited European countries. At the end of the programme, a Master’s Thesis will be prepared on a research topic jointly selected with the two host Universities.

On the successful completion of EuMi, students will be awarded a Master of Informatics and will receive a degree from each of the Universities where they spent a part of their study: a “Laurea Specialistica in Informatica” (“Specialist Degree in Computer Science”) by the University of Trento,
a “Master of Science in Computer Science” by RWTH Aachen University, a “Master of Science in Informatics” by the University of Edinburgh.

The EuMI programme is intended for a small number of top-level international students. In order to guarantee a ratio between the teachers involved in the Joint Master and the EuMI students of close to one, a maximum of 30 students per year will be selected. Candidates should have a solid background in basic Computer Science disciplines and a keen interest in the fields of Net-Centric Informatics, Embedded Systems Informatics, or Life-Sciences Informatics. Prerequisites are a first level degree in Computer Science or closely-related disciplines and a fluent knowledge of spoken and written English.

Admission requirements and selection criteria

Students are accepted in the program regardless of sex, age, or nationality. A student to be accepted must fulfil the following requirements:

* A first level (at least three years) degree in Computer Science or closely related disciplines, awarded by an internationally recognised university-level institution.
Students who have not yet completed their first degree, but expect to graduate before August 31 2008 can apply provided that they will obtain the degree and supply the EuMI secretariat with a degree certificate by August 31.
* Fluent written and spoken English knowledge, certified by either an IELTS score of at least 6.0, a TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based) / 217 (computer-based) / 81 (internet-based) or CAE score of at least C; students with higher English scores (IELTS 6.5; TOEFL 580 / 237 / 88; CAE B or A) will be preferred. Student who have not yet a certificate, but who expect to have it before August 31, can apply to EuMI. If selected, the admission will be conditional on the receipt of the English certificate by EuMI before August 31.
Applicants who are Nationals of the exonerated Countries (please see list in the FAQ ) do not have to submit a language certificates. IF YOU ARE NOT IN THE EXONERATED LIST, YOU NEED AN OFFICIAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE CERTIFICATE, EVEN IN CASE OF ENGLISH SPEAKING ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES.

Students will be selected according to the following criteria:

* Profile: academic records, work experience, other related qualifications
* Level of English knowledge
* Research & Development experience
* Motivation
* Reference letters
